FUNGUS BRAINS - Ron Pisto's Real World LP
Highly recommended (much of it reminds of not only the Birthday Party but also Richie's favourite band of all time, Union Carbide Productions... check out the track linked here)
Limited edition 2011 repress (long out-of-print, good luck finding a copy in Australia!) of this essential 1983 album from Melbourne, Australia's Fungus Brains. While it does feature a horn and unbridled guitar heaviosity from a very young Mick Turner, it also sounds current with other Oz records of the time from bands like the Birthday Party.
The music presented here is intense, basic punk rock with this crazy sax and a vocalist who sounds like he's got ants in his dacks and screams better than Gibby Haynes ever did. What happened to this guy, Geoff Marks, coz he's helped create what is a legendary album.
I dunno whether the band recorded this whilst under the influence of a mushroom haze, but that hardly matters coz the band rips new holes into the rotting carcass of rock'n'roll and then pisses on the remains.
This record received recognition in both Forced Exposure and Touch And Go 'zines at the time.
If you're bored with all the scenery, eat a coupla blue meanies.
