One of the most interesting and intense releases of the American underground. This record was a pivotal moment for Swans -Jarboe assumed co-leadership with Michael Gira, and the contrast between their musical approaches is fascinating.

Menacing, outrageous numbers, such as "Beautiful Child", are paralleled by strangely gorgeous ballads such as "Blackmail", and sometimes these approaches intersect (like on "Our Love Lies"). Gira also emerges from this as a much stronger vocalist - his wild roar develops into a deep, world-weary moan that's evocative of Nick Cave.
