I suppose on paper You Am I were Australia's answer to Nirvana in that they recharged the underground rock world in Oz that had been growing stagnant in the early 90s. The Sydney via Seattle sound is apparent from Tim Rogers' screams and riffage on the Nirvana-esque opener "Coprolalia", producer (and Sonic Youth's) Lee Ranaldo keeping things nice and noisy. "Berlin Chair" sounds like an early Foo Fighters song before that band even existed. They'd ditch the overt grunginess on subsequent albums and adopt a more power pop style, but Rogers would grow as a distinctive songwriter. Looking back now though, this album stands as a great moment frozen in time.

Originally released in 1996, Hourly, Daily marked a defining moment for the band, capturing a new level of melodic sophistication and lyrical intimacy while retaining the raw energy that cemented their status as one of the country’s greatest rock acts.
