Mason City’s busiest punks, Why Bother?, keep releasing new music - and we can’t help but be impressed by their ability to sound like no one else. Over the years, they’ve carved out a niche that’s entirely their own: a dark, eerie brand of punk that feels both claustrophobic and alive.

The artwork for Case Studies — Philippe de Champaigne’s Vanitas, Still Life with a Tulip, Skull, and Hourglass — perfectly sets the tone. If the painting locks life, death, and time into a tense stillness, Why Bother? infuse their songs with motion, friction, and raw electricity.

There’s vibrancy here (In Between The Distance and Indoctrination burns bright), but also dissonance, frustration, and shadow. Case Studies isn’t meant to lift you up — it’s meant to make you feel something real, something unfiltered. And in an algorithm-driven world where so much art slides toward safe sameness, I’m thankful that a band like Why Bother? still exists, pushing against the flattening tide.
