WET LEG - Moisturizer LP (colour vinyl)
Limited edition clear vinyl.
It's hard to define Wet Leg's music. From their emergence onto the scene with the unsettlingly punchy Chaise Longue, they immediately defied categorisation, with their surreal and sexually charged lyrics being delivered in a droll monotone by frontwoman Rhian Teasdale over catchy and classic indie-rock instrumentals.
They followed it up with a strong self-titled debut, and now they're back with moisturizer, which sees the band exploring their sound and pushing it into further depths of catchy strangeness.
Teasdale's vocals are still the star of the show, whether she's singing sweet pop choruses, flowing in one of her trademark sexually-surreal spoken-word verses, or just letting it all out in a cathartic scream. This album sees the band covering wide swaths of territory around what it means to love and be loved, whether that means feeling like you may die (CPR), wanting to lash out in a violent and cathartic release (catch these fists), or laying awake at night, wishing that your pillow was your lover's body (pillow talk).
These songs pull from a wide palette of inspirations as well, from classic indie rockers like The Strokes and The Breeders, to the quirky indie sensibilities of Sidney Gish and Courtney Barnett, just to name a few.
Between Teasdale's vocals and the band's clear sense of style, they are carving a lane all their own within the indie-rock space, and I think we'll continue to see the band refine, develop, and explore their capabilities moving forward. On this album, however, they deliver us a stylish, fun, emotional, and creative set of tracks to soundtrack a large chunk of the summer to come.
