This is a fantastic LP where Tom Verlaine mutates his classic guitar vamping to accommodate drum machines and synths. What we get is maybe his most hypnotic record ever, featuring great, layered production and dance beats. The tunes are more accessible than on the Television albums and his singing warm and slinky, not so much the 'strangled cat' vocals of his punk days. Tom even includes a couple of love songs here with the smitten Foolish Heart and Swim. Meanwhile, workouts such as Five Miles Of You have typically far-flung lyrics, machine-funk rhythms and great melody lines. And then the signature guitar break is a raga-rock flight of spacey and crystalline wonder. A jewel in the Verlaine crown...
