STEEL POLE BATH TUB - The Skull Tapes LP (colour vinyl)

$47.95

Limited edition of 75 copies on white vinyl.

Steel Pole Bath Tub was formed in 1986 by Mike Morasky and Dale Flattum in Bozeman, MT. The duo relocated to Seattle where they met drummer Dorothy Kent... ultimately relocating as a unit again to San Francisco shortly thereafter.

The Skull Tapes contains the first released SPBT recordings with the band's solidified trio lineup of Morasky, Flattum and Kent. This trio would serve as the lineup for the band's entire career. The Skull Tapes was originally released on cassette in 1987 and has become a collector's item both because of its rarity, but also its content.

The band quickly followed the release with a string of classic albums on Boner, and they played shows supporting Nirvana, Killdozer, Jawbreaker, The Melvins, The Flaming Lips, Hole, Sonic Youth...

This reissue is a must have for anyone who wants to experience the true punk underground bubbling beneath the surface in the late 80s prior to the massive grunge explosion! Original tape transferred, remastered and cut by Bob Weston (Shellac) at Chicago Mastering!

"I fell in love with Steel Pole Bath Tub more than 30 years ago at KTRU in Houston, Texas, when I encountered the record that combined their ’89 LP Butterfly Love with 1990s Lurch. I already liked plenty of grotty, unhinged guitar bands, but these guys had more than just nasty riffs going on. Morasky’s use of cassette loops and sly, sinister TV and movie samples, in combination with Mor-X’s fluid, busy drumming (ten bucks says he played in his high school’s jazz band), makes SPBT’s songs feel thrillingly disorienting, even divided against themselves. The seething rippers always seem just about to explosively unravel, like a ball of rubber bands nicked with a knife; the grinding dirges might collapse at any moment. I got to see the band play live a few times back in the day, and onstage they could create an almost overwhelming firehose of barely controlled volume and energy." - Philip Montoro
