Metalmania does a very good job of picking up the best pieces of New Zealand's long jangly music tradition and taking them in new directions. Songs like "Dream Date" are as catchy as anything ever written in the eighties heyday of Flying Nun Records. "No Taste Bomber" has one of those lovely warm melodies that The Bats basically own, but Salad Boys don't take it in a gentle folk direction - rather they jam it out and let it get heavier.
