One of the 90's smartest, funniest, most arty and, perhaps unbelievably, influential post-hardcore bands, Nation of Ulysses spoke to those of us who hated the capitalist system but thought maybe the war for young minds could be won with wry satire.

The band, featuring future indie 'superstars' Ian Svenonious, James Canty, Steve Gamboa (Make Up / Weird War/ French Toast et.al), Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, Young Ginns, production work) and the last mystery man in rock, Steve "Bad Dog" Kroner, were musically very much of their time and scene.

Said scene was post-"Revolution Summer" DC and, unfortunately by the 90's, nearly everyone who took up the challenge to eschew tough guy, old school hardcore merely aped Fugazi's style. Though NoU were a far more violent, shambolic take on it, it's impossible to deny the Dischord poster band's influence.

The real magic came from the lyrics, the manifestos and the image. Firstly, NoU were staunch leftists with both a strong anti-parent message, as well as a marked, anti-baby boomer / co-opted counter culture viewpoint.
