The American Recordings series of albums are one of modern music's greatest documents. A great artist reaching the end of his career but still having that passion for his craft. The joy of these albums is Cash finding a second life as a musician and really making outstanding music at his advanced age. What makes Unchained just that bit better than most of the other albums in the series is the consistency. The song choices are very good and Cash is in his greatest period vocally, before his illness kicked in but late enough for that deepness and richness to come through.
