HEADCOATEES - Girlsville LP
Expanded to include two extra tracks, their first two singles – "Headcoat Girl" and "Davey Crockett"!
As an old man, I have no idea whether we're allowed to use the term "girl power". if we ARE, then this record would be the perfect application of it.
Ultra-cool femme version of Billy Childish's 60s-dipped Headcoats; the prolific Childish is on the reigns as composer of their original material. Initially, Holly Golightly, Kyra LaRubia, Ludella Black, and Bongo Debbie were Thee Headcoats' backup singers before teaming up with Childish for Thee Headcoatees.
They do a masterful job on the mic, injecting the throwback garage rock sound with a funny, feisty personality. Take your pick of a 60s girl group, only add more sexual liberation and sarcasm.
"Run for Your Life" is easily one of the worst Beatles songs, but Thee Headcoatees' version of it is a much-needed snarky retort from a gals' perspective. Also, gotta love the gender-flip on semi-covers like "Melvin" (orig: "Gloria"). "Dirty Old Man" is another highlight; it's pretty hilarious.
Girlsville is pure fun.
