"Here we pair two very limited cassette releases of unexplainable instrumentals. It is utterly unique, and wonderful music! It sounds like happy time in the Chrome universe (or, conversely, like dark psychedelic soundtrack jams). To me, it's always sounded like circus music meets the Faust/Wümme aesthetic. It totally would have been on the NWW list if it had been issued earlier. This stuff’s never been on vinyl before (though a later tape release by Ross, ‘Grandfather Paradox,’ garnered much acclaim when reissued last year). This is a joint release with Audio Dregs." - Mike McGonigal
"... two amazing/obscure 1980s cassettes from musician/painter Alexander Ross aka Fantastic Palace: different in tone from his solo Grandfather Paradox album reissued by Jan Anderzen, F.P. is more focussed on almost Red Krayola-style pop songs and instrumentals, with a wild teen garage aspect that is as dazzling and naively out of time as Department Store Santas. Guitars, brass, electronics and vocals are put to the service of weird ethno-pop numbers that could almost be Tori Kudo plays the Chrome songbook while what sounds like a children’s choir interpret The Faust Tapes. Throw in some almost Corky-style ballads all played by Mooney-era Can, OTT F/X and a weirdo early Shimmy Disc/UK psych ‘feel’ and you have a secret modern classic. Totally fantastic and highly recommended." - Volcanic Tongue
We're simultaneously hearing Purling Hiss, King Blood, Boredoms, Chrome and the Ralph and Clone discography. Dark, playful, cosmic and exhilarating!
