The reputation, influence, and appreciation for The Doors are unquestionable. As a band, The Doors were a trendsetter for what would become the darker side of rock music, gothic rock. The hypnotizing keyboard work swelling from Ray Manzarek mixed with Robby Krieger and John Densmore's punchy instrumentals created an excellent standard for the dreamy, yet aggressive, sound of a new genre. Jim Morrison's chilling, deep, and sexual vocal delivery paired with his romantic, revolutionary, death-obsessed, and poetic lyrics would prove as a major influence for an entire genre. On Waiting for the Sun (1968), The Doors graced listeners with a swell of these proto-gothic songs. They are dark, immensely romantic theme songs for the counter-culture movement of the 1960s and every iteration of it afterward.
