BRMC turns experimental again after the rather pop-oriented Baby 81. The latter might have been their well-produced album, with radio friendly songs and potential underdog hits destined to become a cult classic for eternity, like most of their oeuvre. But Beat the Devil's Tattoo sees Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes retracing steps, back to their dirty roots with some experimentation thrown in, e.g. the fantastic Evol -what an epic chorus- or the noisy War Machine. Add some shoegaze and unexpected hooks and you get a very decent long player.

Beat the Devil's Tattoo is blend of their awesome debut BRMC in terms of gritiness combined with some catchy hooks that Sonic Youth and The Jesus and Mary Chain would have killed for. Shoegaze fuzz rock ignoring contemporary trends on the whole.
