Big Black's first release as a band project - the preceding Lungs EP was basically a Steve Albini bedroom project - Bulldozer sees Albini and Santiago Durango pioneering the drill-like guitar sound which made the project so distinctive. Jeff Pezzati rounds out the lineup on bass, whilst Pat Byrne guests to provide organic drums here and there - but the drum machine is a key part of the Big Black sound and is still very much a presence.

Steve's clearly been listening to lots of hardcore punk in the gap between recording Lungs and this, giving everything just that extra edge of furious emotion which helps bridge the gap between Lungs and the rest of the Big Black discography. You'd struggle to imagine Atomizer growing out of the previous release, but you can absolutely hear how Bulldozer cleared the way to Big Black's more accomplished albums, which makes the title pretty apt in hindsight.
