Formed by drummer Charles Hayward, guitarist Charles Bullen and 'non-musician' Gareth Williams, the group was guided by a simple mission statement: "All possible processes. All channels open. 24 hour alert."

While other bands from the late '70s strove to be different, This Heat simply were unique. As Simon Reynolds wrote, "Instead of punk's crude reduction of rock 'n' roll, This Heat took their bearings from more expansive inspirations: free jazz, Captain Beefheart, musique concrete, and reggae's disorienting dub techniques."

With a palette as wide-ranging as effective, This Heat's first LP is one of the most perfectly realised experimental rock albums of the era – alongside Wire's Pink Flag, Pere Ubu's Modern Dance and The Pop Group's Y – and remains singularly modern.

Nearly 50 years on, it is something the world has still not completely caught up with.
