Post-hardcore legends ISIS followed their 2004 critically acclaimed third LP, Panopticon, with two albums that found the band further exploring the symphonic, cinematic aspects of its previous work while also reminding longtime fans of the band’s roots as heir to bands like Eyehategod, Melvins, and Neurosis.

The ferocity of 2009’s Wavering Radiant occasionally recalls the band’s earlier, gnarlier period, but honed to fine point, with even more progressive and atmospheric elements integrated into its avant metal grind. Wavering Radiant also contains the epic “Hand of the Host,” which, along with the album’s double-shot finale of “20 Minutes / 40 Years” and “Threshold of Transformation,” captures the band’s immediacy and range at peak power. Produced by Joe Barresi (Melvins, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age) and featuring, on two songs, guest guitarist Adam Jones of Tool, Wavering Radiant is an appropriate swan song and a culmination of the band’s singular vision.

Though ISIS disbanded in 2010, the band undoubtedly left its mark on generations of aggressive bands to follow. Along with contemporaries like Pelican and Cave In, ISIS forged a legacy that continues to reverberate today in bands as disparate as Kowloon Walled City and Chat Pile.
