Many overlook Still as it is not a "proper" album but a gathering of bootleg tracks and live sessions recordings - most of them poorly recorded - outed after Ian Curtis' death.
However, this is still (ahem!) an essential Joy Division release because it is the strongest and most sentimentally immediate expression of what Joy Division is: rough, nerve-wracking energy encompassing a subtle core of melodic irony. Curtis' voice, both messed up and oddly pompous, resonates just perfectly with the cavernous chill of guitars on "Dead Souls" or "New Dawn Fades", while "Ice Age" or "The Kill" are pure flows of fucked up, cold punk energy.
Curiously, even the most poorly recorded tunes (sound engineering issues apparently) can't spoil the expressiveness and energy of the songs.
A pure, unaltered diamond mineral under a rough cover of dirt, foul mood and guitars.
