Some Jerks were once described as sounding like Sleater-Kinney covering the Shangri-La’s. That’s nice. We think they sound more like Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra pashing in the surf. Or making out in a vintage spy flick like Dr No. Or like the house band in Monster Beach Party.

Listen to the honeyed vocals of Victoria Watson. Her lip’s curled, she has a paper-shredding scream, but only when she wants to use it – for effect – over Will O’Brien’s pipeline guitar and the washes of drummer Simon Walker’s ride cymbal and the thump of his tom-toms.

There’s definitely a strong ’60s flavour, though. Yeah, the Shangri-La’s are in there. And other girl groups, like the Crystals, as well as lots of nugget-y garage stuff, and lots of indie-punk ’80s and ’90s trash you’ve heard before too. So far, so familiar, etc, etc.

But Some Jerks are tougher. Watson first made her mark in the Aampirellas, with Evil Dick of HITS fame. That should tell you all you need to know. Ever heard a surf-garage band cover Slayer’s Raining Blood, then turn around and nail Blondie’s Dreaming like it was theirs all along?

Second record Strange Ways more than delivers on the lick and the promise of the band’s first album, Buddy Rich Made Me Cry (2012) and their debut self-titled EP (2011), which was mixed and mastered by the legendary Kramer, who worked with Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers and Bongwater.

In the meantime, Some Jerks have kept busy, playing with the Bellrays as well as an endless slew of local bands, and releasing a double A-side 7” single, Dark And Dead Of Night / Nancy (yep, that Nancy), with a film clip directed by The Search For Weng Weng cult filmmaker Andrew “Stumpy” Leavold.

This is a long-awaited release. It’s been four long years for Some Jerks, but it’s been well worth the wait. We are very proud that Strange Ways will be the very first official vinyl release on Pig City Records, in a hand-numbered pressing of just 300 copies.
