I read a review somewhere where the reviewer said that Waits appeared to be attempting to combine Bogart's character in Casablanca with the Dooley Wilson's (the piano player) with a touch of "On the Road"'s Dean Moriarty thrown in. I can't do better than that, so I'm just quoting it here.
