CIVIL UNION - Seasick, Lovedrunk LP

New Zealand’s Civil Union hail from Christchurch, moving to Auckland after the earthquake.

A powerful statement that hearkens back to the NZ and Aussie noisemongers, recording for maverick labels like Xpressway and Red Eye/Black Eye, of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.

On high rotation here at Strangeworld and needless to say, recommended.

"The band do actually have a sweetly lyrical melodic sensibility -that legacy of the Flying Nun era- but Civil Union take an unseemly pleasure in torturing the sound with the jangliest of dissonance, grim distortion and misanthropy that’s unmatched in its cynicism by any band short of The Drones. Like the Drones too, most of Civil Union’s debut full-length -finally seeing a release through Christchurch label-collective Melted Icecream- is devoted to crappy, contemporary issues and the leftover bits are dedicated to love, or at least its shitty remains. The things which initially drew me to Civil Union remain the strongest attractions: they have a songcraft that is diverse and really just much more diverse than most post-punk bands. This is post-punk that has had its bare bones wrapped in the nasty, stinking flesh of grungey noise rock, like if Rowland S Howard and David Yow had had a band together." - Chris Cobcroft, 4ZZZ

"These New Zealanders carry the downer dope torch with a certain strained pride." - Rob Fletcher, Terminal Boredom
