I have never seen the footage linked below - stunning, genius - but was fortunate enough to have seen the Buttholes 2 nights in-a-row at the Old Greek Theatre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo Butthole Surfers left Touch n Go, signed with Rough Trade, made a huge sum of money doing so and, if I remember correctly, built their own studio. Then they went crazy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe band had also built up quite a following with their thoroughly modern psychedelic sounds, black humour and amazing live shows. Their record releases were met pretty universally with celebration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo one was prepared for the band's completely committed shift into the realm of cheesy electronic drums, cheesier synthesizers and even goofier arrangements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy we were so shocked is anyone's guess; if Butthole Surfers were anything, it was unpredictable. No two records ever sounded the same, but Piouhgd was radical and in a way that was 'uncool'.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thing is, we had this, the previous year's Widowermaker! EP, guitarist Paul Leary's solo distasterpiece The History of Dogs and Gibby and King Coffey's still extremely confusing Jackofficers record Digital Dump - all of which kinda felt of a mind, if not sounding exactly the same. In short, the public were over-saturated by \"Digi-Butties\" which, in large part, speaks to why this album is not so loved by their Gen X audience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI can't say that it's for everyone, but the years have heightened my appreciation for Piouhgd and it's kissing cousins.
