This band is based entirely around his latest monster analog weather synthesizer (also called "Weather Warlock"). In short, this instrument takes information from the Weather—sun, rain, temperature, wind, etc.—and translates those daily variables into a randomly bubbling new-agey drone. The main console has a boatload of knobs and controls which can be configured into an infinite number of settings, mutating the weather drone from sublime yoga waves to shrieking thunder bubbles. Side A starts in the mire of an electronic sunset with Quintron at the helm of the Weather Warlock synth, twiddling knobs and responding to the day's waning UV rays. Slowly, the Gulf Coast acid rock emerges courtesy of AARON HILL (EYEHATEGOD, MISSING MONUMENTS) on Drums, GARY WRONG (WIZZARD SLEEVE, VATICAN DAGGER, etc.) on supreme noise guitar, and Quintron on second guitar. Two of New Orleans more prolific free jazz reed players—PAUL GRASS (tenor sax) and TRAVIS BLOTSKEY (baritone sax)—help to glue this mass of southern scum rock to the lineage of serious free music shamans such as Sun Ra and Peter Brotzman. Side B presents the Weather Warlock instrument alone in the drone zone—doing its solo thing during a very active and stormy New Orleans sunset with Quintron occasionally tweaking the controls in harmony. The resulting music is basically a greatest hits of what mother nature and Weather Warlock are capable of by themselves.

Limited edition of 500 copies on yellow vinyl.

With a hard-won reputation for unmissable live shows blending high powered piano-driven rock'n'roll, swamp blues, vaudeville and Aussie boogie, The Dirt And The Sky is the sophomore LP from the Danny Walsh Banned, following Rolling On.

“This Is The Sonics” follows the legendary “Here Are the Sonics” (1965) and “Boom” (1966) LPs which rocketed the Tacoma garage rock band into music history with a gritty, sped-up, brutal rock & roll attack that sounded like nothing that had come before. The band’s principal songwriter/member is GREG CARTWRIGHT, who’s been leading the shifting cast of characters since 2001. You may be familiar with some of the band’s work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg’s other projects have been on your musical radar: THE OBLIVIANS, PARTING GIFTS, COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS, ‘68 COMEBACK, DEADLY SNAKES, DETROIT COBRAS. Regardless, as far as Reigning Sound is concerned, this is as good a place to start as any because through many line-up changes and mood swings, the central, constant feature is the way Greg writes songs.

This particular embodiment of the band includes longtime keyboardist DAVE AMELS, who joined the band seven years ago when Reigning Sound recorded an album, consisting mostly of Cartwright’s songs, with former Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss. Dave proved to be key in putting together the current line-up as well. About three years ago, Greg was asked to make a promotional EP for Scion. Recordings were set to take place in Nashville where he had lined up two local friends to round out the band, but as fate would have it, both had to bow out at the last minute. Luckily, MIKE CATANESE, BENNY TROKAN and MIKEY POST - Dave Amels’ bandmates in Brooklyn soul group THE JAY VONS - were up for the task. The four flew to Nashville, learned the songs, and recorded them with Greg in a couple of days. Thus was born the group that you hear on Shattered. They’ve been touring and playing together ever since, and Shattered proves that the musical union is both exciting and consistent for fans of Cartwright’s songwriting. The album was recorded at Daptone’s Brooklyn studio and masterfully engineered by WAYNE DOUGLAS. I mean, there's no lack of great OZ noise these days, but Exhaustion have managed to create a sort of post-scum/prog hybrid that hearkens back to those long gone bands—like the early (Mick Turnerera) Moodists—who emerged from the Vegemite-stinking ashes of the Little Band scene. They generate a certain kind of noise, yeah, but it doesn't feel like anything anyone else is doing. It has a spatial quality and language of gestures that only recalls complete anomalies like Mars. Exhaustion put out a couple of great albums in Australia, then made the weird-seeming decision to tour and record a one-sided record with KRIS WANDERS, a tenor saxophonist who was in the thick of the early European free jazz scene. Wanders had played in various Brötzmann ensembles beginning in 1965, and appears on such legendary LPs as Schlippenbach's first Globe Unity record and Kees Hazevoet's Pleasure One. He moved down to Australia in the '70s and had played and recorded with several people, but only on CD, so we never knew about it. Wanders's first hook-up with Exhaustion was a surprisingly civilized affair. The music was as dense as the early Tony Williams Lifetime or This Heat, but never really got into the freak register, if you know what we mean. A gorgeous side. When we heard there might be another tour in the works, we begged for a boon, and this album is the result. While similar to the first collab record, this one also allows itself to get unhinged in a whole different way. Again IAN WADLEY (from MAD NANNA) is on bass, along with DUNCAN BLACHFORD on guitar and vox, and PER BYSTROM on drums. And the results are amazing free rock with a mix of blare and wobble that will leave you breathless. As sweet as a lost Futura side.
Includes download code.

Her long anticipated debut record, written and recorded during her time spent in the raw American landscape of the Sonoran Desert, after having left the art/punk scene and saturation of Brooklyn to explore concepts of transformation, personal rebellion, and that which exists out on the boundaries of our humanity. Filled with mysterious and emotional songs, Legends is the anthem of that journey, tracing rock n roll's ancient history off road through personal incantations of vanguardism, and telling her vogue rebel stories from the artist streets of New York and the vast Southwest.
An amazingly accomplished, super smooth selection of songs from the ever burgeoning Prince-meister. 2 albums in and Prince has already gotten to the stage of penning, performing and producing all of his own material. Compared to his debut it sounds fuller yet more restrained. I Wanna Be Your Lover is a clean, funky soul number which spares away into a sultry, spaced-out jam. The classic Prince sound unearths further with the stirring, defiant Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? The song has a bit of everything and showcases some brilliant guitar heroics towards the end. Sexy Dancer is efficient disco. The next two tracks are soft and sensual but somewhat snoozy. Bambi is an example of blistering hair-metal way before the genre even took hold. The album flips back to fantastically dreamy R&B with Still Waiting. Compared to the ridiculously over-the-top Chaka Khan remake, the I Feel For You here is comparatively reserved and only lets go towards the end with that familiarly frantic stabbing of chords. The album expertly closes with the bountifully bittersweet It's Gonna Be Lonely. With Art Official Cage we are viewing something truly amazing - Prince reconnecting with the world. It was heralded by him joining Twitter and getting out there as a social media presence, which was closely followed by the cover art reveal for Art Official Age's first single, "Breakfast Can Wait" featuring an image from the at this point legendary Chappelle's Show sketch about him. This was a declaration that he was paying attention and he was in on the joke and he was not so far removed in the off-world colonies as we may previously have imagined. He even references his notorious contractual squabbles with Warner Brothers in one song.

The plot of the album (and it is very unabashedly a concept album with a plot) follows from this, with Prince being unfrozen from some form of cryogenic slumber in the future and re-learning how to integrate with a synthetic modern society that has lost touch with its own earthy sexuality and connects largely through computers and machines, a society which you can quite imagine needs Prince more than ever. The songs that hew close to this plot talk a lot about reality television and the way the lines of fame have blurred and how we (in the broad sense of the modern world) have become caught up in artifice and disassociated from our rawer emotions. These are, quite pointedly, interspersed with traditional, old school Prince sex jams. He also recognizes that he himself has kind of let fame take him over and create a gulf between himself and his audience, and that he is now making an effort to reconnect with where people are and where modern thought is, but with the caveat that the modern world has itself strayed from its own earthiness and should really consider meeting him halfway.

So that's what the album's about, but what's the album like? The landmark session was produced by Miles and TEO MACERO and featured Betty on vocals, accompanied by JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE drummer MITCH MITCHELL, guitarist JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, HERBIE HANCOCK on keys, and Dylan/Miles session bassist HARVEY BROOKS. Other players included bassist BILLY COX (BAND OF GYPSIES), saxophonist WAYNE SHORTER, and organist LARRY YOUNG. Now, Light In The Attic, with full support from Betty herself, presents these recordings to the public for the very first time. These historic sessions—never heard, never bootlegged—predate Miles’ revolutionary album, Bitches Brew, and are the true birth of Miles’ jazz-rock explorations, along with the roots for Betty’s groundbreaking funk that came years later, starting with her self-titled debut in 1973. While, ultimately, these recordings would go unreleased for nearly half a century, they would greatly shape each of their careers.

The vibe is intrinsically unique, fresh, and futuristic—jazz heavyweights playing psychedelia, rock, and jazz-fusion long before the term became commonplace. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can’t be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.

There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago – we live in an age that’s been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn’t get sexy with their “Lady Marmalade” for another year while Millie Jackson wasn’t “Feelin’ Bitchy” until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty’s fierce style wasn’t completely out of Ike’s shadow until later in the decade.

Ms. Davis’s unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song “Uptown” for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late ‘60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix — personally inspiring the classic album ’Bitches Brew.’

But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself.

Labelle wouldn’t get sexy with their “Lady Marmalade” for another year while Millie Jackson wasn’t Feelin’ Bitchy until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty’s fierce style wasn’t completely out of Ike’s shadow until later in the decade.

Ms. Davis’s unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song “Uptown” for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late ’60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix — personally inspiring the classic album Bitches Brew.

A common thread throughout Betty’s career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn’t fit with the vision.
