(centered on Akron) and Extermination Nights in the Sixth City (centered on Cleveland). Of the two, Burn Rubber City, Burn! has a clear blueprint in Stiff's The Akron Compilation. Four songs from the Stiff disc have found their way onto Burn Rubber City, Burn!, but that slight overlap isn't enough to make the album redundant. Instead, the record fleshes out the portrait of Akron past. Bizarros and Rubber City Rebels blurred the line between bluesy, hard-rocking, keyboard-spiked proto-punk; in particular, Bizzaro's own slithery theme song, "I Bizarro", dramatizes the shift between Detroit stoner-snarl and punk's frantic animosity. And although "Rubber City Rebel" doesn't appear on Burn Rubber City, Burn!, the group is well represented by "Kidnapped" and "Such a Fool", two tracks taken from their '77 split with the Bizarros that demonstrate the no-holds-barred ethic of the time, before punk became petrified by its own image; the former is a raw, blistering spasm that predicts the coming hardcore storm, while the latter sounds as if it could be a raucous Alice Cooper demo.

Any Akron comp without Devo, however, would be disastrously incomplete, and Burn, Rubber City, Burn! includes the 1974 demos of "Mechanical Man" and "Auto Modown". Robotic, withdrawn, synth-twiddling, and playfully bleak, these two songs set the tone for later comp highlights such as Chi-Pig's "Apu Api" and "Ring Around the Collar". Neither would have been out of place on a contemporaneous Rough Trade comp, and members of the Slits-esque Chi-Pig would go on to co-write Devo's "Gates of Steel". (Mark Mothersbaugh, meanwhile, penned the lyrics for the group's "Ring Around the Collar".) Their presence helps pinpoint the big bang of Akron's more experimental contingent.

But for every gem like Jane Aire & the Belvederes' "When I Was Young"—in which Aire belts out gutsy and righteous tirades over jerky math-punk—there are oddities like "Narrow Road" by 15 60 75 Numbers Band—a listless, jazz-fusion meander that seems to have been listed for historical purposes only, seeing as how the group's lineup consisted, at one point or another, of Gerald Casale of Devo as well as Chrissie Hynde, an Akronite who moved to England and launched the Pretenders just before the Akron scene took off. It's unfortunate, also, that this completist spirit didn't spill over to the Cramps, who recorded a definitive batch of punkabilly demos in Akron in 1979 and whose frontman Lux Interior was a native.

Akron has been honored with two documentaries about its punk heyday—2003's It's Everything, and Then It's Gone and 2005's If You're Not Dead, Play. Cleveland, meanwhile, has had none (with the exception of 2007's Cleveland Screaming, covering the city's '80s hardcore scene). Yet Cleveland's leading band of the era, Pere Ubu, were every bit as trailblazing as their Akron counterparts Devo. The fresh context of Extermination Nights in the Sixth City gives the anthology's two Pere Ubu selections—"Heart of Darkness" and "Final Solution", plucked from their first two singles circa 1975 and '76—even more stark power. Leader David Thomas was still going by the ominous moniker Crocus Behemoth, and his mystique pervades these remarkable documents, which foreshadow the poetic tension and asperity of post-punk before punk itself had even solidified. Pere Ubu's predecessor, Rocket from the Tombs, gets a single song, "Life Stinks", but that's all they need; the anti-anthem remains as haywire and nihilistically disjointed as the day it crawled out of Thomas' feverish brain.

Cleveland contained plenty of protean talent besides Pere Ubu and kin. The Dead Boys, featuring former members of Rocket from the Tombs, may have broken out of Cleveland and headed for New York's CBGB scene, but plenty other punk-rock provocateurs stayed behind and flourished like blacktop weeds. Among them were the Pagans, Cleveland's answer to Rubber City Rebels. Their pulsing, Iggy-like conniptions are represented on Extermination Nights by three raging tracks, most notably the garage-rock-on-glue-fumes desperation of "Dead End America"—a beer-swilling, blue-collar rallying cry in the midst of socioeconomic collapse.

The artist side of the Cleveland scene finds expression on Extermination Nights, too. These quirks help make for a more solid, consistent listen than Burn Rubber City, Burn!—a higher batting average aided by the fact that Pere Ubu's tracks here reflect some of the best and most important music the group ever created, while Devo's contributions to Burn Rubber City, Burn! amount to mere marginalia.

Ironically, one of the most popular bands to emerge from the collective ooze of Burn Rubber City, Burn! and Extermination Nights in the Sixth City were the Waitresses. The quirky, lackluster, blues-rock oddity "The Comb"—which appears on both The Akron Compilation and Burn Rubber City, Burn!—in no way prepares us for the new-wavers who eventually charted with "I Know What Boys Like", performed the theme song to "Square Pegs", and were covered by the Spice Girls and on "Glee". Their success underlines the lack of cohesion to the Akron and Cleveland scenes. They were a free-for-all mix of inspired amateurs, ambitious opportunists, and serious, self-styled artists. In that way, Ohio wasn't all that different from any other place, then or now.

Still, there's an underdog pride and a furious invention to this music that unites these anthologies. The ache of doomed ambition, of a creative spirit pushed to the limit of endurance, and often well beyond, is palpable. Industrialized civilization may have been crumbling in the Rust Belt in the late '70s and early '80s, but Burn Rubber City, Burn! and Extermination Nights in the Sixth City prove just how much decay, disenfranchisement, and the specter of encroaching dystopia can fuel the fiercest of sounds.

Highly recommended.

Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. This year’s last year: August of 2014 was Ganglion Reef, Wand’s debut album release, on GOD?, reveling in their dark circuits and three-ring modulations. Following that, they ranged from their south-Cali base, towing their sound around this maze of interstates and state routes. Shows of all kinds were playing, plenty of people to meet up with on the way. Hands across the water: Europe got booked. And suddenly, just look over your shoulder—it was March of 2015, with a second album entitled Golem (this time on In the Red) trailing Wand’s sound farther down the road, past the sky, into storm and casino food. Since the mid-'90s, frontman Timmy Vulgar has kept the hearth fires burning, weathering the peaks and declines of the world's interest in the Motor City with a stalwart dedication to his own Midwestern D.I.Y. ideology. Since launching Timmy's Organism as a solo venture in the late 2000s, he's continued to bash out wicked, noisy fare with an assortment of outside influences, but always with a molten rock & roll core. On their later releases, Timmy's Organism has identified more as a band than a solo effort, and the tight-knit trio featured here is comprised of Vulgar on vocals and guitar with returning bassist Jeff Giant and newcomer Blake Hill on drums. Opener "Get Up, Get Out" is a ripping call to arms with a vigorous punk spirit and some burly, MC5-ish guitar licks so fuzzed-out that the strings practically play themselves. The title track is another fog-cutter with low, Sabbath-like riffs that lay like stone columns over which Vulgar piles intense wah-wah bursts and gross slabs of tone-evaporation. In fact, the heightened production value on Heartless Heathen draws more attention to the intensity of Vulgar's guitar playing, which really shines throughout these ten songs. He's not a flashy player, but his mix of controlled chaos and total abandon while managing to deliver accessible songs is a lot harder to pull off than you'd think. Masked by the freewheeling chunkiness of "Mental Boy" and "Back in the Dungeon" are the veteran rock chops of all three players who make a huge amount of noise for a trio. A pair of nice, midtempo ballads adorn the front and back sides of the record in the mellotron-aided punk/glam epic "Please Don't Be Going" and the psych-plodder "My Angel Above," adding some additional depth and a break from Heartless Heathen's overall mind-scrambling attack. Legend has it that for centuries, the inhabitants of the village of Korpolombolo were dedicated to the worship and practices of Voodoo. This strange and seemingly unlikely activity was apparently introduced into the area after a travelling witch doctor and a handful of her disciples were led to Korpolombolo by following a cipher hidden within their most sacred of ancient scriptures. The reason it led them there is unknown, but their Voodoo influence quickly took hold over the whole village and so they made it their homethere, they were able to practice their craft unnoticed and unbothered for several centuries. This was until their non-Christian ways were discovered by the Church and they were burned out by the crusaders, the survivors cursing the village over their shoulders as they fled. To this day, the now picturesque village of Korpolombolo is still haunted by this Voodoo curse; the power of the curse can be felt throughout the grooves of the Goat records.

To many, Craig Bell is well known as bass guitarist/singer with Mirrors and Rocket From The Tombs, two bands that were among the foundation stones upon which the Cleveland, Ohio music scene of the 1970s was built. Totally out-of-print.

Collection of wild early DEATH demos, presenting the three young HACKNEY brothers consolidating their powers as they embark on a trip into pure rock and roll music. For many years following the emergence of punk rock, nothing changed. Punk bands either signed contracts and played the rock band game or they lived in a world parallel to the world of commercial rock and roll. Farther along came “the year that punk broke,” a puzzling decade and a half after the whole thing had first been absorbed into the mainstream in the last of the 1970s. And so it was. The books were written; the pronouncements made. Then came news of Death. They’d self-released a single in 1976; the tracks made it onto an unheard punk compilation a couple decades later. In 2008, an obsessive young man tracked them down and found that the surviving two brothers had master tapes from all those years ago. These made up the truly senses-shattering album…For The Whole World To See. Suddenly, the book was open again and the history of punk rock needed to be rewritten to include Death. The sounds on …For the Whole World To See are those of young men, scorching their influences in the process of becoming new. Spiritual-Mental-Physical gives us Death by transistor radio, with a tinny yet- furious sound representing the 1970s environment of Death. Here, the musical landscape that inspired them is more clearly defined as they demo material that didn’t make it to the studio, but shares the same ferocious bent as “Politicians In My Eyes,” “Keep On Knocking,” and the rest of ...For the Whole World To See. Alongside songs from 1975, 1976 and 1980, Death III contains two songs from 1992, as the HACKNEY brothers reconvened nearly a decade after they’d stopped playing together. Death III serves as a companion piece of sorts to the A Band Called Death documentary, tracking the band’s movement from spiritual young rockers to older and wiser, bruised-but-undefeated brothers, in pure musical terms. David Hackney’s visual representation of Death was a triangle, where “spiritual,” “mental” and “physical” formed the three angles. With this in mind, For the Whole World to See is clearly the physical corner, with its undeniable proto-punk power; Spiritual–Mental–Physical explores the mental axis, with Death working through some of their influences—including The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and even ELO—in their practice space. Death III is the spiritual end of the portrait, bookended by the dreamlike rock visions of David Hackney that created and propelled the band called Death.

Since the discovery of DEATH in 2008 and the release of the archival LP ...For The Whole World To See, the story has been often told. Three African-American brothers, DAVID, DANNIS and BOBBY HACKNEY, tapped into the surging energy of their hometown rock-and-roll scene (mid-70s Detroit) to produce a style and a set of songs that, while completely unappreciated in their day, proved later to be a powerful missing link in the evolution of punk rock. All this was predicted by their leader, older brother David, on his deathbed, ten years before their rediscovery. His stubborn insistence on keeping the name Death instead of signing a record contract under a more palatable name is, in itself, a defining act of true rebellion. The power, precision and passion of the music says everything else that need be said. It has been an EPIC time since 2008: Death began playing live again to large and grateful audiences, meanwhile issuing two additional archival records, Spiritual-Mental-Physical, and Death III. The release of the documentary A Band Called Death took the band farther into the public consciousness than it appeared even the music could, and Death followed the paths to more and more listeners, eventually bringing their explosive show all around the world. During this time, the question always asked was, Will there be a new record? Now, there literally is, and Death and Drag City are proud to bring it to you, entitled simply N.E.W. Inspired by the positivity brought to them by ever-increasing numbers of new fans, the current performing Death (Bobby Hackney, Dannis Hackney, and Bobbie Duncan) completed several songs started back in the late 1970s by Bobby and David, as well as composing entirely new songs that continue the timeless vibe, feel and resolve of Death with remarkable drive and vigor. For many years after disbanding the original Death, Bobby and Dannis played different styles of music, but with the same deep spiritual investment. Bringing that spirit back to Death, their ability to make new songs in the same vein is fantastic. N.E.W. surveys the whole Death story, making a statement that screams to the soul, even when reviewing the tracklisting. That statement says: If you want RELIEF, LOOK AT YOUR LIFE, it’s the STORY OF THE WORLD in THE TIMES that we are living in, things moving so fast. It’s PLAYTIME, but remember we are AT THE STATION where we must ask ourselves WHO AM I? Well, YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK, preparing for a RESURRECTION, which will bring about CHANGE.

Includes download code.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Punk 45 album charts the rise of underground punk and post-punk in the UK from 1977-81.

Punk 45: There is No Such Thing As Society. To label the Melvins simply as a grunge band would also be criminal. They share a lot of qualities with the bands of the grunge explosion, but the band has always experimented with their sound to make it more difficult to classify. Their sound has an essence that has always remained the same but everything around that essence has been shifting. If there was only one album, however, that characterized their sound as a whole, Houdini would be it. Heavy as fuck from "Hooch" to "Spread Eagle Beagle," the band keeps up 60 minutes of solid sludge/stoner/grunge rock without a single dull moment. "Hooch," "Lizzy," "Honey Bucket," "Hag Me," and "Pearl Bomb" are my favorites here but you can't go wrong with any of the songs.
