LP","description":"\"Echo Park’s Mono Records was an early supporter of the Echo Park bands who don’t fit so easily into that kind of garage\/psych\/fuzz-and-fun punk-as-pop sound; instead, Mono’s select releases tend to celebrate the esoteric, and here’s the definitive statement so far: a compilation of L.A. bands heavily inspired by U.K. sounds during that bottomlessly special post-punk moment where the spirit of ‘anything goes’ met the ability to make everything sound good. Shoegaze, C86, labels like Glass and Fire and Rough Trade—this is what Life Is … or at least where it starts. Some tracks here are previously released—two from FROTH's excellent Bleak LP, a-side of TRACY BRYANT's 'Little Things' single also on Mono—but necessary anyway, especially if you didn’t get a limited original. But some apparently exist nowhere else, like the churning 'Fear' by JEFF FRIBOURG (ex-Froth, now in MIND MELD) and his band NUMBER.ER and also his Omnichord, or the Nikki Sudden-Go-Betweens stand-out bum-outs from BEAT HOTEL, or BILLY CHANGER's pixilated John Carpenter-style mostly instrumental 'Ride,' a close cousin to his recent LP track 'Chiller.' NOAH KWID (once of DIRT DRESS) also makes solo vinyl debut here as KWID, an understated Fast Product-style drum-machine post-punk song called (naturally) 'I Find Myself, and MOTHER MERRY GO ROUND delivers two striking songs that split the difference between Orange Juice and Joy Division. Altogether, it’s not just a powerfully consistent vision but a nice counterpoint to what the outside world thinks it is people do here: seven bands a little out of step and a little out of time, except for with each other.\"—Chris Ziegler (L.A. This band is based entirely around his latest monster analog weather synthesizer (also called \"Weather Warlock\"). In short, this instrument takes information from the Weather—sun, rain, temperature, wind, etc.—and translates those daily variables into a randomly bubbling new-agey drone. The main console has a boatload of knobs and controls which can be configured into an infinite number of settings, mutating the weather drone from sublime yoga waves to shrieking thunder bubbles. Side A starts in the mire of an electronic sunset with Quintron at the helm of the Weather Warlock synth, twiddling knobs and responding to the day's waning UV rays. Slowly, the Gulf Coast acid rock emerges courtesy of AARON HILL (EYEHATEGOD, MISSING MONUMENTS) on Drums, GARY WRONG (WIZZARD SLEEVE, VATICAN DAGGER, etc.) on supreme noise guitar, and Quintron on second guitar. Two of New Orleans more prolific free jazz reed players—PAUL GRASS (tenor sax) and TRAVIS BLOTSKEY (baritone sax)—help to glue this mass of southern scum rock to the lineage of serious free music shamans such as Sun Ra and Peter Brotzman. Side B presents the Weather Warlock instrument alone in the drone zone—doing its solo thing during a very active and stormy New Orleans sunset with Quintron occasionally tweaking the controls in harmony. It's jerky, derailed, and draws heavily from early post-punk, but chugs along at a classic punk tempo, blasting out totally agitated lyrics the whole time. Space madness? Or just a need to escape the surface of this planet, even if it just be through the act of playing two minute punk jams? Either way, it's exciting and different. Side A presents the Abdabs' sole recording, recently unearthed, unheard since 1978. Side B compiles two raw\/rare\/remarkable 1979 solo records by Abdabs drummer Richard \"City Ram\" Waddy. The City Ram Waddy 7\" sets a benchmark for primitivism in Australian DIY, while the follow-up City Ram And Ja Mystics 12\" achieves propulsive Suicide\/PiL-like repetition. Among them, there was a critical mass of 11 aesthetically unified songs. In typical Wire fashion, however, the remaining material was something other: it had the sound of a band already moving in a different direction, beyond the album project in which they were engaged at that time. These tracks were the basis for Nocturnal Koreans. The difference between the two clusters of work birthed at Rockfield has its roots in discrete approaches to the studio process itself. Nocturnal Koreans emphasises studio construction over authentic performance, using the recording environment as an instrument, not just as a simple means of capturing Wire playing. Although it's become de rigueur to talk about Wire's capacity for self-reinvention, that's never the whole story. Certainly, the impulse to pursue fresh ideas with each phase of work is buried deep in their artistic DNA, but they've balanced that commitment to the new with a core character and attitude that's always at some level recognisable as Wire-without being reducible to a formulaic sound. It's this enduring dialectic that gives Wire their unique status as a long-established band that continues to forge ahead with original music: always unmistakably Wire but always reimagined and reframed with each successive project.","brand":"Pink Flag","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":20968311809,"sku":"wirenocturnal","price":33.95,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1273\/6111\/products\/wire_-_nocturnal.jpg?v=1466406852"},{"product_id":"iggy-pop-party-lp","title":"IGGY POP - Party LP","description":"\u003cspan itemprop=\"description\"\u003e180 gram audiophile vinyl. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIggy's pop punk album tends to get short shrift because it isn't all raw and dirty like his Stooges stuff, but it isn't *all* bad. Bang Bang is one of the greatest New Wavey arty songs Iggy ever did, easily on a par with The Endless Sea but easier to dance to; the real downside of the album is that nothing else exudes the same charisma and menace. Pumpin' for Jill is ridiculously sexy and presents an interesting precursor to the sort of slice-of-life narrative Iggy would perfect on Brick By Brick, but is more interesting for the musical direction it suggests than the execution here. Still, Party works much better than the rather uneven Soldier, which was midlly ruined by clashes in the production booth between David Bowie and James Williamson.
