It comes as a real surprise looking at the LP sleeve how glamorous The Fall were in 1988 when The Frenz Experiment was released. Maybe they had better photography and, of course having Brix E Smith & Marcia Schofield in the band helped but even Mark E Smith looks great. In fact, in 1988 The Fall were becoming almost mainstream - there are hit singles here! - covers mostly (Victoria & There's A Ghost In My House) but The Frenz Experiment is about as close to pop The Fall ever got. Of course, being The Fall, its not that straightforward and naturally one of the best tracks and one of the best Fall songs ever - "Guest Informant" - even appears here. Things would change in The Fall before too long but in 1988 they were contenders and this was another is a run of terrific albums that The Fall made while they were the Beggars Banquet label.
