Some many revolutions in a year, in a life. WAND launch their third album in what can only be called the relative blink of an eye, and it is 1000 Days. This year’s last year: August of 2014 was Ganglion Reef, Wand’s debut album release, on GOD?, reveling in their dark circuits and three-ring modulations. Following that, they ranged from their south-Cali base, towing their sound around this maze of interstates and state routes. Shows of all kinds were playing, plenty of people to meet up with on the way. Hands across the water: Europe got booked. And suddenly, just look over your shoulder—it was March of 2015, with a second album entitled Golem (this time on In the Red) trailing Wand’s sound farther down the road, past the sky, into storm and casino food. No time to spare; more dates to be played across the landmass. And another set of European dates later, 1000 Days. Since the mid-'90s, frontman Timmy Vulgar has kept the hearth fires burning, weathering the peaks and declines of the world's interest in the Motor City with a stalwart dedication to his own Midwestern D.I.Y. ideology. Since launching Timmy's Organism as a solo venture in the late 2000s, he's continued to bash out wicked, noisy fare with an assortment of outside influences, but always with a molten rock & roll core. On their later releases, Timmy's Organism has identified more as a band than a solo effort, and the tight-knit trio featured here is comprised of Vulgar on vocals and guitar with returning bassist Jeff Giant and newcomer Blake Hill on drums. Opener "Get Up, Get Out" is a ripping call to arms with a vigorous punk spirit and some burly, MC5-ish guitar licks so fuzzed-out that the strings practically play themselves. The title track is another fog-cutter with low, Sabbath-like riffs that lay like stone columns over which Vulgar piles intense wah-wah bursts and gross slabs of tone-evaporation. In fact, the heightened production value on Heartless Heathen draws more attention to the intensity of Vulgar's guitar playing, which really shines throughout these ten songs. He's not a flashy player, but his mix of controlled chaos and total abandon while managing to deliver accessible songs is a lot harder to pull off than you'd think. Masked by the freewheeling chunkiness of "Mental Boy" and "Back in the Dungeon" are the veteran rock chops of all three players who make a huge amount of noise for a trio. A pair of nice, midtempo ballads adorn the front and back sides of the record in the mellotron-aided punk/glam epic "Please Don't Be Going" and the psych-plodder "My Angel Above," adding some additional depth and a break from Heartless Heathen's overall mind-scrambling attack. One of the album's strongest highlights arrives midway through with "Wicked Man," a sludgy punch to the solar plexus whose visceral tone and vibe represent just how on point Timmy's Organism is on this release.

Cheap fanclub repro on blue colour vinyl and matching blue sleeve.

The Elevators weren't so much a psychedelic band as they were a pack of Texas garage rock bozos who liked to sing about time and space and mind alteration and stuff. The first half of the album features tracks in a relatively harsh industrial metal style, with sarcastic humour, and dominant use of sampler and voice samplings, but after "Unlistenable" segues into the Devo cover "Gates of Steel", the remaining tracks gradually become more mellow, starting with industrial tinged melodic punk rock and then goes to full-on ambient rock mode.

Stylistic diversity can sometimes ruin consistency of musical material, but Surgical Meth Machine actually pull it off quite well. It isn't just some indie guitar rock album; it's an album that rides solely on the emotional and mental anguish of J Mascis, that comes out so perfectly in his voice and guitar playing. And the interplay between J Mascis and Lou Barlow is nothing short of astonishing. Musically speaking, it's a slate of noise rock like no other, really. J Mascis has already cemented himself as a guitar god by this point. He's just so incredibly dynamic, and he can do everything with that guitar. There are plenty of more technical players than J, but more than any other guitarist, I get the sense that he'd rather be doing nothing than peel off a loud, overdriven, gloriously sloppy, raw solo, which allows them to fit in perfectly even when they don't - the speedy, punk-informed "They Always Come" slows down for no reason except to allow the guy his Guitar Hero Moment, but his playing is so infectious and so ear-catching that I really don't care.
180 gram vinyl.
Highly recommended.

One of the most criminally overlooked bands ever, Melvins have been making quality music since the grunge movement was in its infancy. To label the Melvins simply as a grunge band would also be criminal. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins – often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector’s prices. Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera.
