The first half of the album features tracks in a relatively harsh industrial metal style, with sarcastic humour, and dominant use of sampler and voice samplings, but after \"Unlistenable\" segues into the Devo cover \"Gates of Steel\", the remaining tracks gradually become more mellow, starting with industrial tinged melodic punk rock and then goes to full-on ambient rock mode.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eStylistic diversity can sometimes ruin consistency of musical material, but Surgical Meth Machine actually pull it off quite well. They sound just as much at home with the harsher industrial metal as they do with the more mellow material. Kozmonaut was the personal project of a young and talented Canadian musician called Michael Gutierrez, who moved to San Francisco in the early '80s. Influenced by Kraftwerk, German culture, and electronic music, Michael recorded the Flieg album all by himself at his garage studio, using the pseudonym of Hans Schiller. 1000 copies were pressed on his own label, Vier Productions Inc., but they were never distributed or sold at the time, with virtually the entire pressing being discarded, as Michael, a perfectionist, was not satisfied with the spelling mistakes on the cover, among other things. In 1989, Michael, along with Pieter Ziegelmeier, formed the famous industrial\/electronic band Kode IV. Sadly, Michael contracted AIDS and passed away in 1994. All the contents of his garage (tapes, albums, synths, and recording equipment) were sold for cheap or ended up in the street. Fast forward to 2010: An adventurous record hunter (Christian Peintner) finds a copy of Flieg at a thrift shop in San Francisco. At first, he thinks it's a German album but after some investigation, he discovers the name of Michael Gutierrez which leads him to Kode IV and then to Peter Ziegelmeier. He visits Peter who tells him the real story of Michael Gutierrez. Flieg is an excellent album, a crossover of a wide range of styles from early industrial (paving the way for Michael's later sounds with Kode IV), to synth-pop, experimental electronics, ambient, and dark wave. The album was self-released on cassette that same year via ICR. This expanded double LP edition features all 13 tracks from the original tape on vinyl for the first time plus 4 bonus tracks. ‘The Where House?’ is a prime example of early UK post-punk\/industrial electronic music. “Combining dub, electro, and krautrock rhythms with psychedelic, kosmische noise in multiple mutations ranging from almost pop-wise songcraft to horizon-scanning motorik flights,” says Boomkat. Most of the damage was done by Colin using guitars, synths, sequencers, drum machines, percussion, and modified toy keyboards with fairly primitive 4-track recording equipment. He was assisted on some of the tracks by Stephan Jadd-Parry (guitar, percussions), Jon Caffery (guitar, bass, e-bow, percussion) and Nick Jackson (synth). All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is sleeved in a replica of the original cassette artwork by Jonathan Coleclough. At their core, these are simple and catchy songs with a solid electronics foundation solidified by driving bass lines and textural keyboard parts. Vocals are shared by both members, and they create an important dichotomy between the masculine and feminine energies that shape the band. Spanish speakers are in luck, because the lyrics are surrealist poetry of the highest order. Thankfully for the everyone else, they occupy that special place reserved for bands like Einstürzende Neubauten, (Jochen Arbeit of EN actually appeared on the bands last album), or Os Mutantes, where they transcend language barriers and are capable of telling a story through the sheer power of the human voice.\u003cbr\u003eHospital Lullabies is a companion piece to a movie of the same name directed by Carmen Burguess, and without question this is their most refined and cohesive statement so far.
