Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on Brown Acid: The Second Trip.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLance Barresi, co-owner of L.A.\/Chicago retailer Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that’s hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/em\u003eOne song on The Second Trip actually never even saw light of day, until now. “Bell Park Loon” by Spiny Norman – sounding like Jethro Tull on more acid and heavier cider – languished in a collector’s archives, unreleased for 38 years until Barresi and Hall arranged to license some of the collector’s goldmine.\u003cem\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/em\u003eBrown Acid: The Second Trip opens with the squealing guitar harmonies and Sabbath plod of Ash‘s “Midnight Wish.” Sweet Crystal‘s “Warlords” is a fuzzy and fierce Deep Purple\/Arthur Brown inspired organ-led anthem. Raving Maniac‘s ‘Rock and Roll Man” is a tight and brash glam-meets-metal tune proving the true potential of a genre later squandered on Sunset Strip poodleheads. “Silence of the Morning” by Glass Sun serves grungy psych while the Volt Rush Band merges MC5 frantic energy with razor-sharp guitar leads. And, Iron Knowledge‘s aptly titled “Show Stopper” features a breakbeat and incredibly infectious detuned bass warble motif that DJs would kill for – had anyone been able to find the tune back in the day. Throughout, The Second Trip is yet another wall-to-wall set of blazing tracks that feels like you’ve uncovered a holy grail. From that simple starting point, Twerps have become one of Australia and the world's favourite guitar pop bands. Their two much-loved albums Twerps (2011) and Range Anxiety (2015) were released by Chapter Music, the first as a co-release with US label Underwater Peoples and the second released outside Australia\/New Zealand by Merge Records. Pat and Rick departed (replaced by Alex Macfarlane and Angus Lord) and Julia stepped forward to share songwriting duties with Martin. Wanders had played in various Brötzmann ensembles beginning in 1965, and appears on such legendary LPs as Schlippenbach's first Globe Unity record and Kees Hazevoet's Pleasure One. He moved down to Australia in the '70s and had played and recorded with several people, but only on CD, so we never knew about it. Wanders's first hook-up with Exhaustion was a surprisingly civilized affair. The music was as dense as the early Tony Williams Lifetime or This Heat, but never really got into the freak register, if you know what we mean. A gorgeous side. When we heard there might be another tour in the works, we begged for a boon, and this album is the result. While similar to the first collab record, this one also allows itself to get unhinged in a whole different way. Again IAN WADLEY (from MAD NANNA) is on bass, along with DUNCAN BLACHFORD on guitar and vox, and PER BYSTROM on drums. And the results are amazing free rock with a mix of blare and wobble that will leave you breathless.
